A Critical Need Emerges
Fifteen-year-old Jamar D. has faced enormous challenges since birth. Diagnosed with arthrogryposis, he has undergone more than 25 surgeries and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. We initially supported this family with rent and utilities when he was born, and have remained in touch with them ever since.
This year, Jamar’s social worker at Nemours Children’s Health reached out with an urgent need: the family desperately needed a wheelchair-accessible van to safely and comfortably transport Jamar to school, medical appointments, and beyond. The timing couldn’t have been more serendipitous.
The Right Gift at the Right Time
Just days earlier, a longtime supporter of Fred’s Footsteps had contacted us to donate a van. The 2008 Chrysler minivan, previously owned by a disabled family member who had recently passed away, was already outfitted for wheelchair access. It was in good condition and ready for a second life.
We partnered with MobilityWorks to ensure the vehicle was thoroughly inspected and tuned up, making necessary repairs to get it into top shape. Thanks to their help—and the generosity of the original donor—we were able to deliver the van to Jamar’s family quickly.
A Gift of Freedom and Relief
“This is a dream come true,” said Jamar’s mother, Dawn. “Getting Jamar to school, doctor’s appointments, and even just out in the community has been such a struggle. This gift gives us freedom. We are beyond grateful to Fred’s Footsteps and everyone who made this possible.”
Stories like this illustrate what makes Fred’s Footsteps so different. We don’t follow a rigid script—we work closely with hospital social workers to understand a family’s unique circumstances and provide customized support that delivers the most impact. Sometimes that means covering rent or utilities. Other times, like with Jamar’s family, it means helping them regain mobility and independence.
Keys to Mobility—and to Hope
“This donation is a perfect example of the power of community and generosity coming together at just the right time,” said Executive Director Christine DiBona Lobley. “Through our KEYS TO MOBILITY program, we’re able to help families like Jamar’s access safe, reliable transportation—something that’s absolutely essential for families managing complex medical needs.”
At Fred’s Footsteps, we believe in thoughtful giving, smart partnerships, and being there right when families need us most. Thanks to everyone who played a role in this beautiful outcome.
