As we celebrated our 20th anniversary, we welcomed back families we’ve helped over the years for a heartfelt homecoming.
For families navigating crises, coming home is so much more than reaching a destination; it’s a hard-fought journey to a new normal. At Fred’s Footsteps, we strive to be a guiding light, offering support and compassion as families find their way back to a place of stability.
In this video, families from our program past return to the moments that once defined their darkest days and reflect on the life they’ve built since. What unfolds is more than a walk down memory lane; it’s proof of what steady support, compassion, and community can make possible.
In June 2015, the Pszenny family’s world was turned upside down when Kyle was hit by a drunk driver while skateboarding to a friend’s birthday party. He suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures, and doctors feared he might not survive. At the time, his mother and step-father were caring for five boys and had to stop working to be at Kyle’s bedside. Very quickly, they found themselves overwhelmed emotionally and financially.
In their most vulnerable moment, Fred’s Footsteps stepped in as what the family describes as “the glue” that held them together. We provided months of support by covering their mortgage and utility bills, lifting the financial strain so they could focus entirely on Kyle’s recovery. In addition, we offered a financial cushion to help them make critical home modifications in preparation for bringing Kyle home.
Because of this support, the Pszenny family was able to stay strong and united through crisis. Kyle’s journey from wheelchair-bound to skydiving and running is nothing short of miraculous – and his family believes that Fred’s Footsteps played an essential role in making it possible.
We’re thrilled to welcome Rachel, Arthur, and Vivian back for another Homecoming update – from their days navigating life-saving care, to the joyful progress Vivian is making today. Their story shows how Fred’s Footsteps support gave their family stability when they needed it most – and how that foundation created a ripple effect, empowering them to open their hearts and home to other medically-complex children.
